    The painful road for veterans

With Planetside 2 launched now, it's fair to say that the road towards release has been a hell of a ride. And that's not only because it was preceded by a real beta that saw player feedback causing drastic changes to the game play. All along the way, there has also been major discussion within Planetside 1 veterans who feel that their beloved game has been dumbed down into oblivion. This article addresses the future of Planetside 2 and why Eve Online is the key for these disappointed veterans to stop worrying. Read more...

Hey @Kongstad, I edited the thread title and added a quote so it could be promoted to an article on the forum, hope that's OK...

F2P done well can be a good way for games to go. I've not had much of a chance to play PS2 (only tried it yesterday, so I haven't looked into the costs of buying stuff yet), however its looking promising for me.

The article raises some good points, though comparing it to an Evil Empire™ might be a step far...

with mittani being a real life freind i know this guy knows what he's going on about, both me mittani met smedley and higby in iceland this march at eve online fanfest, i go every year as im a big player within GSF (goonswarm federation) which is a 8000 man corporation which mittani leads

The plans they have for this game go along with the quote in that article

The whole idea of Planetside 2 has always been to release a Battlefield 3 on crack and then turn it into a Planetside 1 on steroids over time.

Ill be going again this march and i can guarantee if we see smedly/higby there, which with SOE links with dust514 they should, then they will be listening to the feedback from the community as a whole.

If eve online is what they are trying to emulate in terms of popularity and business model, it makes me wonder if I should try eve online instead?

I kinda loved EVE back in the days. Looked awesome and for some weird reason I managed to read a lot of books and such due to my playstyle.
Could also be I had more time back then.

I used to love eve. Remember when goons only had 200 players in syndicate region in t1 crap! Haha. Got bored after I got to 50m skill points and -10 sec rating.

I've played a lot of EVE Online, though not a lot relative to an EVE player, more I mean a lot in terms of tens of hours, which is a lot for any game. It's curiously compelling. Not sure if I've ever really enjoyed it though. It takes itself way too seriously and is taken way too seriously by people. I was impressed when the Goons turned up and took the piss out of that side of it, back in the day when they were just a horde of numpties blowing stuff up in incredibly cheap ships, but that didn't last and they became as deranged and weird as the rest of the game, more so in some cases. What I like about PS2 is that unlike EVE it doesn't set its stall out to be something that it's not*. It's a shooter.

*I don't know what the fuck EVE is, but there's something profoundly wrong about a spaceship game where you can't actually fly the ship yourself.

Eve has many flaws but its still the only mmo these days where the pvp actually matters.

That was what I loved about EvE. It hurt when you died. Only POTBS has gotten close (of games I've played).
