Default Buying a sound card - recommendations?

As the title says I'm looking to buya a sound card for my PC. Currently using onboard sound and I feel it sucks. It's gaming only as I don't listen to music or watch movies or anything. Going to upgrade my headset as well, probably to a Sennheiser g4me 360 or what it's called. So it would be nice to have 7.1 sound on the board. Been looking at the Asus Xonar Phoenix, but as always I have no idea about most PC hardware

    Cheers

    So you'd buy a 7.1 soundcard for a 2.0 set of headphones?

Are your current headphones USB? If so, you're not using your onboard soundcard, you're using your headphone's soundcard. If they're a cheap set, there lies your problem.

As I said I have no clue about the hardware, going off reviews on the net. I've only had good experience with Sennheiser, that's why I'll go for that. But having read a bit more into the soundcard part of things, I see I won't get anything extra from the Phoebus at 3x the price.
